Michael Neeld: Focus on ground source heat pumps

Michael Neeld runs Comeytrowe Equestrian Ltd, a British Horse Society approved livery yard on the outskirts of Taunton. The farm also has five office units, which are converted from old barns and range in size from 600 to 3,000 square feet. A 35kW ground source heat pump was installed in 2007 and extracts water directly from a borehole on the farm. The system works like a backwards refrigerator and water is abstracted at 13-14 degrees Celsius, heat is extracted and returned as ‘waste’ water at 7 degrees Celsius. The system is reducing the farm’s reliance on fossil fuels, while at the same time producing some unexpected benefits…
