Paul Sousek is trying to create the first carbon neutral commercial farm in Cornwall and perhaps even in the whole of South West.
He has transformed his farm in Jacobstow, Cornwall, in just 4 years from conventional farming to Transition farming. By this he means organic farming of native breeds to produce food for the local market using none, or a minimum of, fossil fuels in the process.
They have almost completed the conversion of the house and farm to renewable energy by installing a wood burner for space heating and wood burning Rayburn for cooking (and heating). They have installed a heat store, which is powered by 40 solar tubes, a wood burner and an immersion heater to provide hot water. The immersion heater and an electric storage heater run off the 5kW wind turbine whenever it is producing more power than our house requires.
They have a bore hole for water, and produce their own 100% bio-diesel from waste vegetable oil, which they use to run the car, Landrover and the farm tractor to deliver the meat boxes.
He now supplies fresh organic carbon neutral meat boxes to the local market.
To help spread the message, Paul is a founding member of Transition Cornwall Network and Transition North Cornwall: www.TransitionNC.org
