Simon Taylor: Focus on ground source heat pumps

Simon and Jenny completed their new-build farmhouse in 2006. Their aim from the outset was to build a modern farmhouse, with maximum energy efficiency and minimum fuel bills. This was achieved by insulating the house above and beyond the requirements of Building Regulations, installing two wood-burning stoves, and by using large areas of glass on the south and west aspects of the house to maximise passive solar gain. The main source of heat for the house is a ground source heat pump, with the system using mains electricity to extract energy from the ground to heat both the house and domestic hot water – this is instead of a traditional gas or oil boiler, but requires back-up such as wood burning stoves for when the outside temperature is below freezing.
